Gyromat surveying instrument

The Gyromat 2000 permits precise orientation, regardless of magnetic deviations or disturbances. It is the fastest and most accurate surveying device in the world, and the first one to work completely automatically.

Inside the instrument is a fast-rotating gyroscope in a gimbal mounting. It always aligns itself north-south, making small oscillations about the meridian; true north can therefore be determined almost everywhere on earth. The extremities of the oscillations are registered electronically; they do not have to be observed by the surveyor, as was the case in earlier gyroscopes.

Gyromat 2000 was developed for mining operations: magnetic ores and rock usually make it impossible to use a compass underground.
